11. Bias or not
Miss Picky
However good your work is However neat the page It won’t escape Miss Picky In a criticising rage However clever the story A Booker winner for sure Forget to put the date in And detention will be yours The words don’t seem to matter The only things that count Are underlining titles And never crossing out So why is she so picky? Just think. It’s obvious, man. Miss Picky can’t write for toffee And she’s jealous that you can. by Andrea Shavick |
Miss Nits
My teacher is not very nice Her hair is infested with lice When my mother complained The headmaster explained She was all he could get for the price by Andrea Shavick Dumbo
My teacher’s got very big ears. When he stomps into class we all cheer. We continue our clapping Each time they start flapping No wonder he’s always in tears by Andrea Shavick |

First Day at School
A millionbillionwillion miles from home Waiting for the bell to go. (To go where?) Why are they all so big, other children? So noisy? So much at home they Must have been born in uniform Lived all their lives in playgrounds Spent the years inventing games That don't let me in. Games That are rough, that swallow you up. And the railings. All around, the railings. Are they to keep out wolves and monsters? Things that carry off and eat children? Things you don't take sweets from? Perhaps they're to stop us getting out Running away from the lessins. Lessin. What does a lessin look like? Sounds small and slimy. They keep them in the glassrooms. Whole rooms made out of glass. Imagine. I wish I could remember my name Mummy said it would come in useful. Like wellies. When there's puddles. Yellowwellies. I wish she was here. I think my name is sewn on somewhere Perhaps the teacher will read it for me. Tea-cher. The one who makes the tea. by Roger McGough |
Example: School is a pot of warm yoghurt at 1 o'clock School is where 2 minutes can last 2 hours School is paint on my fingers and nose School is fraction-filled tiredness School is the pure and lovely sound of the bell at 3 School is squirming when you're unsure School is polished cracked floors School is catching up with a friend's news, etc. |
13. Reading between the lines
Please Mrs Butler
Please Mrs Butler This boy Derek Drew Keeps copying my work, Miss. What shall I do? Go and sit in the hall, dear. Go and sit in the sink. Take your books on the roof, my lamb. Do whatever you think. Please Mrs Butler This boy Derek Drew Keeps taking my rubber, Miss. What shall I do? Keep it in your hand, dear. Hide it up your vest. Swallow it if you like, my love. Do what you think is best. Please Mrs Butler This boy Derek Drew Keeps calling me rude names, miss. What shall I do? Lock yourself in the cupboard, dear. Run away to sea. Do whatever you can, my flower. But don’t ask me. by Allan Ahlberg |
